I watched Elephant with my Mum last night. Probably not the best idea as she works in a school, so perhaps it was a little 'too close to home' for her. Though it's only 78 minutes long it almost felt like an eternity until the climax ensued. Climax is not necessarily the right word, neither is action - the word 'mayhem' probably suits the disjointed story-telling the most. We, the viewers, are introduced and re-introduced to the characters at different points of their day, confusing the time scale and skewing our idea of what is high school normality. It creates a frustrating monotony that builds an uncontrollable tension, and once you're verging on breaking point we finally see the catastrophic consequences of this banality and dissatisfaction. Disturbing, gripping and one that definitely stays with you... I'm not sure how Mum slept last night, I haven't seen her yet.
